Your little one's wearing an outfit one minute and then stripping down the next minute. Learn why your little one likes to go nude, and what to do about it. When it comes to making a lightning-fast escape, your toddler is probably a mini Houdini. One minute she has on that super-cute yellow dress Grandma bought her; the next minute she's streaking through the house wearing nothing more than a smile. And, of course, stripping down to her birthday suit doesn't happen only at home, around family: She bares all when friends are visiting, and you've had to stop her from going buff in public more than once! So what's up with your kid's urge to be au naturel? Those frilly ruffles on your daughter's dress or the zillion buttons on your son's sweater may look adorable, but they may not feel so good against bare skin.

Yes, getting undressed and running around naked is perfectly normal toddler behavior. It's just one way toddlers assert their independence and show they have their own opinions and abilities. It can also be a sign that your toddler is ready to start potty training. It doesn't take long for a determined toddler to become adept at undressing. Sometimes it's cute, but other times it's frustrating or awkward, especially when you're out in public or have guests. It's fine to indulge your toddler's desire to run around with bare buns when it's appropriate. But it's important to start teaching him that bodies are private, and he must wear clothes around other people. Offer acceptable choices: Ask if he'd like to run around the living room three more times and then get dressed, or get dressed right away.

How do I get my toddler to stop stripping down in the middle of the night?
The doorbell rings, and my 3-year-old son races to the door. I'm right behind him, trying to get there first. I grab the handle and push him behind me as he excitedly yells to greet his grandparents. I normally wouldn't be in such a frenzy trying to shield him from the neighbors; it's just that he's running around naked again and refuses to put on clothes. His nakedness doesn't particularly bother me.
By Dawn Yanek Nov 15, Photo: istock. So why does your toddler seem like he wants to audition for the next instalment of Magic Mike? There are a few likely explanations. My three-year-old son is obsessed with doing laundry. First up: sensory issues. Temperature can also be an issue, especially at night. Kids often run hotter than adults, but parents are so worried about kids being cold that they end up overdressing them. By stripping, toddlers are simply getting cool—and telling us to lay off the layers and the toasty temps. Aside from keeping your cool, you can get your child more involved in the dressing process.
