The s in a lot of ways has been a period of significant growth for the soca artform, elevating it from a regional phenomenon to the cusp of international status. By contrast, the s was all about burying the umbilical cord of calypso. If you listen to soca from the late 90s, a lot of it sounds like calypso after a few expresso shots. In the s, soca became a teenager with new found freedom — taking any and all influences from genres such as dancehall, RnB and Pop and stumbling giddily, knocking over past expectations and pissing-off elders. During that period, Soca ingested the chanting lyricism of early Bunji and Treason 3 Suns?
Soca music is the backbone of Trinidad Carnival. Without good music from artists during the festival, fetes, cruises, Carnival Monday and Tuesday would not be the same. This is why every year we look forward to songs produced by new and established artists. Music sets the tone, vibe and atmosphere of all the events.

Soca music defined by Lord Shorty , its inventor, as the " So ul of Ca lypso" is a genre of music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago in the early s and developed into a range of styles during the s and after. Soca was initially developed by Lord Shorty in an effort to revive traditional Calypso , the popularity of which had been flagging amongst younger generations in Trinidad due to the rise in popularity of Reggae from Jamaica and Soul and Funk from the USA. Soca began its development in the early s and grew in popularity throughout that decade. A sound project started in at KH Studios in Trinidad to find a way to record the complex Calypso rhythm in a new multi-track era. Soca continues to incorporate contemporary music styles and trends. He started out writing songs and performing in the Calypso genre. A prolific musician, composer and innovator, Shorty experimented with fusing Calypso and elements of Indo-Caribbean music after before debuting "the Soul of Calypso", Soca music, in the early s.
As comes to a close, the time has come to reflect on some of the great things that the year has given us. This was a runaway hit from the minute it dropped, becoming a staple track played at every fete and simultaneously launching Nailah Blackman's soca career. We hadn't seen lyricist Orlando Octave on the soca scene for a while so we weren't disappointed at all when he dropped 'Single'. The track generated a few answer backs from his female counterparts, including one from Queen of Soca, Alison Hinds. If you thought Nailah was a one-hit wonder, think again. The songstress proved that she can churn out hits both in and out of the Carnival season. Machel Montano makes first appearance on the list in a way only Machel can: with back-to-back entries. Like most of you, we couldn't choose which one we liked more, which is probably why the two tracks are neck and neck. Uncle Ellis won and with his rags to riches story and he had this vibesy tune to accompany his signature wine. These guys created a whole new soca sound with this smash hit, and, like Workout, was constantly in rotation during the season.
