A woman bitten to death by one or both of her pet Great Danes had alcoholism and may not have been clear-headed enough to seek help after she was attacked, authorities said. Preliminary findings indicate Mary Matthews, 49, apparently bled to death, said Doyle Burke, chief investigator with the Warren County coroner's office in Ohio. The dogs were known to be aggressive and had bitten people before, authorities said. Her husband, Mark Matthews, said that he and his wife rescued the dogs about two years ago and that one had bitten him recently. Both Great Danes — one of the largest breeds of dog but known for a generally docile temperament — have been euthanized. Mark Matthews, who had been in the county jail since Oct. Police didn't specify when they believe the attack occurred. It wasn't clear why Mark Matthews was in jail.

Matthews , 49, on Friday at her home in Clearcreek Township. No details were available Tuesday. She was found in the bathroom of her home near the front door. Blood was found in the garage, entryway into the house and laundry room, as well as in the bathroom and other parts of the house, according to an incident report. Matthews was found by her husband, Dale Mark Matthews, when he returned after two days in the county jail to their home in a subdivision off Ohio 73 and between Springboro and Waynesville, where they lived with two dogs, according to records. The husband said they kept the dogs for two years against his better judgment, noting one was vicious. Dale Mark Matthews said theirs weighed and pounds, with the smaller one the more aggressive. Under current Ohio law and to hold insurance, rescues could no longer take Great Danes that had bitten someone, Bath said. Bath said she founded Harlequin Haven in and could count the number of times she had been bitten by one of the rescues on one hand.
