1. Before Renting an Apartment
Q: My son is currently renting an apartment in Minneapolis. He and his roommate both signed a lease that runs until the end of August. My son recently confided that their apartment is infested with cockroaches and bedbugs. The infestation has been going on for a few weeks now, and they have notified their landlord of the problem. But the infestation has not been properly addressed. At one point, their landlord sprayed toxic chemicals in their oven to fight off the cockroaches. The living conditions there are unacceptable, and the landlord has failed to effectively resolve the pest problem. My daughter faced the same situation where she rented a couple of years ago, but her landlord was much more responsible and had her place professionally fumigated.
How to identify cockroaches
Q: My family and I started renting a townhouse in Burnsville recently. Within a week, we discovered our first cockroach. Trying not to panic, but being overwhelmed with moving and a new baby, we shrugged it off. We found another cockroach a couple weeks later, and immediately reported it to our management. Pest control did not come out until a week later. We kept finding cockroaches, so pest control has had to come out twice. We moved from a luxury townhouse in Rochester, and our old place has had no roaches before or after our stay.
Cockroaches can be major pests in restaurants, hospitals, warehouses, offices and buildings with food-handling areas. They secrete a substance which can stain surfaces and produce bad odors. They can also destroy fabric and paper products. Only a small percentage of the actual number of cockroaches in a house, are seen. Correct identification of cockroaches is important as there are many insects that look similar e. Adults lay eggs contained within dark-colored egg cases size and shape of a dry kidney bean. Corrugated cardboard boxes are a good source of cockroach infestations.
